  Words From Blue

I will wait for you. You were made for me so I will wait for you. I will wait for you to remember. I will wait for you to lose your anger. I will wait. I’ll be waiting because with you is where I belong.

My head is spinning. Nellie and Wyatt definitely had a story worth listening to. I’m in awe of the two. I think it’s so sweet how Wyatt handled knowing Nellie was about to lose her mom. Their love is a powerful one. You can just see it in the way they look at each other.

I’m literally fanning myself as the two take off to get lost somewhere. I think it’s adorable how they can’t seem to keep their hands off each other. I hope to find that someday. Someone to love, someone that loves me back with so much devotion.

  “A penny for your thoughts.”

His warm breath fans the shell of my ear. Sending a chill up my spine. I close my eyes.

I won’t dare to think that Ryan is the one that will give me that type of love. I won’t be fooled by these love stories. This is my real life. I’m not living in the fairytales come true that Bean, Kamara, and Nellie have shared with me.

I’m not going to fall victim to the lust I feel for this man. Ryan is dangerous. I can feel it with every fiber of my being. It would be easy to fall into the comfort of the trap he’s setting for me.

Once I do, I’ll be the one nursing a broken heart and hurt feelings. I’m not going to fly too close to this sun. I know for a fact it burns.

“Nellie and Wyatt have a great story,” I force out, not wanting to reveal my true thoughts.

“Yeah, it’s crazy. I never thought I’d see my brother fall so hard. I mean, there was a time when Wyatt just didn’t care.” I turn to see him shaking his head with a smile on his full lips. “But it’s a good look for him. I’ve never seen him so happy in my life.”

“Your family sticks together. I like that,” I muse out loud.

“Yeah, it’s the way Mom and Dad raised us.”

  He shrugs.

I think on his words. My father raised me and my brother to be proud of our family and to be there for each other. However, I’ve always felt a little like an outsider. My dad may spoil me, but I can’t help having the feeling that my brother is in on something special.

It’s like Dad and Nelson have a secret society I’m not a part of. If you listen closely enough, you can hear it in the way Dad calls my brother by name. Never Nelson, his American name, but Neruson or Ne my brother’s nickname. Dad calls his name with such purpose—like there’s meaning behind Ne’s name alone.

I guess that’s another reason I’ve been trying to create my own thing with film school. Sometimes, I just want desperately to make my father proud. Maybe then we can have our own thing like him and Ne.

  “Where’d you go, gorgeous?”

Ryan’s voice pulls me from my thoughts. It’s like velvet caressing my skin. I have goosebumps covering my arms.

“I’m here,” I say, waving him off.

Ryan twists his lips, giving me a sideways look. I hold my breath, waiting for him to call me on my bullshit. Something else I’m getting used to around here.

Skepticism is still written all over his face when he responds to me.

“The party’s getting ready to wrap up. A few of us are heading to the pub. If you’re not too tired of stories, Felix and his fiancée will go next,” Ryan says.

My head whips in the direction of Felix and the pretty girl I’ve noticed clinging to his side. The one he kissed earlier at breakfast. I had no idea they were engaged.

How on earth did I miss the rock on her finger?

It’s huge, twinkling back at me as her hand rests on Felix’s cheek. Felix has a possessive hold on her waist as he looks down at her with a secretive smile on his lips. She says something to him that makes his eyes light up.

My heart races when he places his forehead to hers. It looks like he’s trying to breathe her in. They make a gorgeous couple. I tilt my head a bit. It seems like all of the Blacks date women of color. At least all of those that I know are dating. I hadn’t thought about it until this moment.

Felix’s fiancée, I think I heard someone call her Kaye, has a pretty red bone complexion. She’s bronzed but her skin has strong hues of red. Her black hair is silky with a wavy curl pattern. It’s swept up on top of her head in a bun now, unlike this morning.

  If I didn’t know bet
ter, I would say she’s Hispanic or perhaps some type of mid-eastern decent—but I do know better. Kaye looks more like one of my cousins on my mother’s side. I’d bet my Prada bag she has some type of Caribbean heritage.

I don’t think she’s Asian, possibly she does have some Hispanic background. I might go as far as saying she’s Samoan, but I question that just a bit. Again, knowing my family.

Kaye is absolutely a mixed baby like me.

I watch as a cocoa brown colored little boy runs over to Kaye. He squeals something out, but I can’t hear it from where I stand. He runs right into Felix’s leg, wrapping himself around it.

John appears snatching the boy up in his embrace. The boy throws his head back in laughter. Kaye looks at the child with so much love. As if he were the most precious thing on earth.

It only takes seconds before Felix plucks the little guy from John’s arms, placing him on his hip. Felix’s other arm goes around Kaye, pulling her in closer.

They look like the picture perfect family. Yet, I don’t know any of their relation to the boy. My mind runs wild with the possibilities. I narrow my eyes. I don’t believe Felix to be the boy’s father. Though, I could be wrong.

I’d say the little fella is about five or six. He’s so cute. I noticed him playing with the twins earlier. However, I was too engulfed in Nellie and Wyatt’s story to stop and think of who he might belong to.

“I can see the wheels turning.” Ryan’s words startle me as they get closer to my ear. “You’re either wondering what our little family will look like or you’re questioning my brother’s little unit. You’re probably thinking Felix has been hiding a kid like Toby’s ass.”

I turn to see the mirth in Ryan’s eyes. I shake my head at him, trying not to allow my mind to go to what our children would look like. I chide myself for allowing him to plant such a seed. It will never come to that between us. When we return home, I plan to stay as far away from Ryan as I can get.

“I don’t think that at all,” I address his words about Felix’s little family, ignoring his other statement. “Although, I have to say, I’m curious now.”

“Oh, trust me, their story isn’t one to be missed,” I take notice of the twinkle in his eyes.

“So the pub it is,” I reply with a shrug.

  Chapter 1

  Secrets of a P.K.

  Kaye

Almost six and a half years ago…

I feel trapped. It’s been that way all of my life. To the outside world I’ve always had to look perfect, act perfect, be perfect. On the inside, I’m a mess.

Or at least that’s how I feel. I’m afraid of my own shadow. I want to be something that I’m not and I’m in love with someone that’s not my someone.

  Yup, an entire hot mess.

It’s not easy being a P.K., a Pastor’s Kid. My daddy has been a pastor all of my life. I’ve never known anything other than being the Pastor’s daughter.

Imagine a six foot four Samoan, raised on the streets of Compton by his foster family. Now that same thugged out Samoan has turned over a new leaf to be a leader in the community, but you can still see the thug in his eyes if you test him. Yeah, that’s my daddy. You’d be a fool to try him.

  Raises hand.

My brother tries my father too. We push buttons just to see how far he’ll let us go, but we never push too far. Well, I don’t. My brother, he’s another story.

I just like to drive my daddy a little insane. Heck, I’ve been dating the same boy since my last year in junior high school because I know it pushes all of his hot buttons. My father can’t stand Alberto.

“That boy is reckless, entitled, and arrogant as the day is long. You and your brother need to leave him to his own devices,” Daddy normally rants.

Alberto is all those things. That’s exactly why I chose him. Well, I have other reasons. I kind of stumbled into my relationship a long time ago—like literally.

It’s hard not to feel stifled in my home. Knowing you’re rocking the boat just a little can be like a drug. One hit and you just have to see what else you can throw into the pond to see if it ripples back.

Yup, I’ve tested being a rebel, but I’ve never gone too far. I want to. I want to have a freeing life like my big brother. A life that brightens the smile on my face with each day.

Danny’s smile lights up the world around him. It’s because he lives his life and doesn’t apologize for it. Someday, I plan to be more like my brother. Outgoing, adventurous, a lover of life and the experience of it.

Which leads me here. In the apartment of the one guy I’ve had a crush on all of my life.

  Felix Black.

Just saying his name in my head makes my heart flutter. All of the Black brothers are drop dead gorgeous. You go from hot to super-hot with the bunch of them.

Although, Felix isn’t the Black brother that all the girls run after first. He’s too quiet and always has a book in his hands. Most of the girls in junior high and high school didn’t think they could hold his attention.

There’s just something about Felix that lets you know he is out of this world smart. It’s not just a look, it’s a persona. You know how you have people that pretend to be so smart?

Those people that are always giving wrong information and talking too much. Yet, there’s that one quiet person in the room that has a secret smirk because they know that other person is full of shit. Yeah, that secret smirk belongs to Felix.

As I look at him now, I can see why girls were always so apprehensive to try to date him. Felix has a quiet strength about him that’s intimidating. Something that’s so hot and sexy, but mysteriously silent. Those long lashes—so dark and thick—casting a shadows over his cheekbones. His golden eyes are sharp and watchful.

I love moments like this, when he has on his glasses. He doesn’t wear them often. He started wearing contacts when he went to college.

I’m just here in his apartment so much I catch the rare moments when he does wear his frames. Moments when he sits in this apartment for hours reading into my deepest darkest secret. Turning through my pages over and over. Reading my words again and again to help me find what’s missing.

Okay, okay, when I say my deepest darkest secret that may be the writer in me. Then again, my father would be the one to think it’s a dark sin best left in the shadow it comes from. Felix has been the one to encourage me otherwise.

I want to be a romance author. Not just any romance. I want to write the good stuff.

I haven’t told anyone else. Not even my big brother. Felix is the only one that knows. He has kept my secret for years. Just one more reason to love him.

“This is good. It’s really good. You’re getting better and better,” Felix murmurs as his gorgeous eyes scan over the pages.

“Be honest. I know you read it already, speed-reader,” I tease because it’s the truth.

Felix reads three times as fast as the average person. It’s insane. He retains all the information and details, as well as the comprehension of the context. I know he’s gotten to the part I’m most nervous about.

He places my writing journal on the coffee table and swings those eyes on me. Taking his glasses off, he studies me. I’m holding my breath. It’s the same problem as always.

“It’s still missing,” he says simply.

I fall back on the couch and groan, throwing an arm over my face. I knew it before he said it. This is driving me insane. I’ll never get it right.

“Maybe I should start writing something else. Maybe this is God’s way of telling me this is wrong,” I whine.

He lifts my arm from my face, looking down at me. I feel my pulse race from the simple touch. My heart is hammering. I try not to look down at his full lips, focusing on his gold orbs instead. I would give all the money in the world to run my fingers through that thick dark hair and push that beanie off his head.

  Stop it, Kaye!

Ugh, my thoughts always get so crazy around him. I don’t know why. I’m just his best fr
iend’s nerdy little sister. Felix has been so sweet to me for years. I’ve been taking advantage of that fact lately.

He’d probably put me out and get a restraining order if he knew I come here more to feed my crush than to have him read my books. I’ve gotten into the habit of writing ten thousand words a day just to have something to show up with.

“God is telling you no such thing. You’re not giving up. I just told you, you’re getting better,” he says reassuringly.

“Yeah, but you’re not talking about that part. You’re talking about my world building and character development,” I huff.

A grin comes to those gorgeous lips. He’s laughing at me. I want to disappear into the couch.

“Kaye, you can’t even say it. It’s sex. It’s not hard to say. You’re having trouble writing your sex scenes,” he says, mirth dripping from his words.

“You don’t have to laugh at me,” I murmur through my hurt feelings.

“I’m not laughing at you,” he says, letting a chuckle slip. “Okay, okay, maybe just a little. It’s just…I don’t know. Not the writing, it’s the actually sex in the scenes. You sound like you have no idea what you’re doing.”
